Integrate Art into your Home

How to Integrate Art into your Home and your Life

1. Buy and hang only the art that you truly like.

We define our lives by the objects we surrond ourselves with. If you can only buy one piece a year, it should bring joy, have value, and enrich your life.

2. Don’t automatically rule out dark, heavy, or offbeat subjects.

Take the opportunity to appreciate the layers of meaning, layers that you can notice over time. Those layers make art a long-lasting joy in your life.

3. Start Neutral.

Even if you don’t want your art to match your sofa, you don’t want it to fight with everything else in the room either.

4. Find you focal points and focus on them.

Some rooms have focal points of their own. Don’t fight those. Art should be part of the total environment. Don’t force it to the forefront if it doesn’t belong there.

5. Grouping can be great.

Two rules of thumbs with groupings: Hang odd numbers and carry something consistent throughout the grouping.

6. Let there be light.

If you can plan before building, add recessed lighting that can be directed at the artwork. In older homes or more traditional settings, use stand-alone fixtures for each piece.

7. Let there be height.

Instead of getting the tape measure out to line everything up, allow the space to dictate what’s best. If, for example, you’re hanging a piece on the side of a fireplace, next to a cozy wing chair, place the painting so you can see it from the chair, where you can turn and be intimate with it.

8. Make the old new again.

Frames tend to be the trendier side of art. So when a trend gets old, the piece of art can get old. A new frame can give a piece new life.

9. Keep the collection clean.

Not only dusting, but it is also important to protect your valuable works from harsh ultraviolet light and from unstable climates.
